Boston Housing Authority is established.

October 1, 1935

Boston City Council approves creation of the agency. Its purpose is to provide affordable housing, clear blighted areas, and engage in urban renewal efforts. The first BHA board is made up of architect Harold Field Kellogg, chairman; Bradbury Cushing, and George Green (appointed by mayor Fredrick Mansfield); and John Carroll, chairman of the state housing authority, and Rev. Thomas Reynolds, pastor of St. Matthews Church in Dorchester (appointed by Gov. James Michael Curley). BHA urban renewal powers are transferred to a new agency in 1957.*
